Congratulations to our Chieftains from Seattle! After a loss on Sunday, the Chieftains played their way back into the winners circle, only to face the Daisy Dukes, who they had loss to earlier in the day, for the bracket championship. After playing 2 games to eliminate the Daisy Dukes out of the competition, the Chieftains claimed the bracket championship.

The countdown begins...Hoopfest is THIS weekend!
As our Hoopfest teams make their final preparations for the weekend of competition ahead, they updated us with what their plans are this week and how the low-fat chocolate milk has improved their performance so far.
After an attempt to drink chocolate milk during half-time of a game, Jessie, team captain of the Chieftains wrote, "we did learn our lesson about the chocolate milk during half-time! It does need a few minutes to settle in your stomach so using it as "recovery" is definitely the way to go. We'll have to plan that out this weekend, because sometimes you only have 60 minutes between games. A few of us have been drinking the chocolate milk for breakfast. I wouldn't recommend doing this everyday but, if you are in a rush, it's been a good alternative."
In their briefing session with UW Athletics' Emily Edison, M.S., R.D., the Seattle Teams learned about the importance of eating healthy and snacking. As they make the 5 hour trip to Spokane, Jessie shared with us her team's plan for how to keep healthy eating top of mind.
"Road trips aren't exactly conducive for healthy eating! But that's another reason why we are going grocery shopping tonight for next weekend. If we have a cooler full of healthier food, we'll be less tempted by those golden arches! We are all making a concerted effort to eat well this week and drink water throughout the day so we are feeling as strong as possible going into this weekend. When you start thinking of your body like it is a tool, you are more conscience of taking care of it. It's like when you are planning to drive your car on a cross-country road trip, you want to get it all checked out - change the oil, fill it with gas and just generally take care of it so there is less of a chance of it breaking down on the side of the road. None of us want to breakdown on the sidelines this weekend!"

Countdown to Competition
With only a week and a half until Hoopfest, the Nutrition Training 4 Hoopfest teams are getting their game on.
Team Glory Daze are practicing outside to prepare for the outdoor courts, while the Chieftans are increasing their exercise routine in order to prepare for the grueling weekend ahead. Both teams continue to refuel with chocolate milk.
"It seems like all aspects of the game change slightly when playing outdoors, but still one characteristics remains the same...the team with the most endurance will be the winners at the end. With only a week and a half left until Hoopfest we have one game remaining and will spend the rest of our time practicing outdoors," says Team Captain Joe, GLORY DAZE
"We are all working out more in anticipation of Hoopfest, so we are in better shape. The good thing is that we all felt strong and less tired than we have in past games," says Team Captain Jessie, CHIEFTANS
Chocolate milk as a post-workout recovery drink has Jessie and Joe thinking outside of the Gatorade box.
"I'm not sure if it's mental or what but after learning about the balance (protein/carbs) in the milk, it really does feel like it gives you some strength after you drink it. Also, it takes pretty good," says Jessie.
"I am continuing to drink the chocolate milk routinely after games/workouts. I feel a little fatigued due to the increase in activity, but I do feel that my legs are stronger," says Joe.
Stay tuned for next week's Nutrition Training 4 Hoopfest update!

Choc Talk with Our Teams
Reactions to Refueling with Chocolate Milk:
For me, the chocolate milk's carbohydrates and proteins helped me still feel energized even after the hardest practices. Mason, Team Captain-UNIKORNZ
Drinking the milk after practice gives me more energy which means that I can play more. Also I don't feel weak. I think it tastes good too. It helps me refuel my energy when I'm practicing. Taylor, UNIKORNZ
I think that the chocolate milk is nice and refreshing after the practice. I think the carbs and proteins in the chocolate milk play a big role in helping to keep me energized. CHOCOLATE MILK R0CKS!!! John-UNIKORNZ
I am drinking the chocolate milk after practices and it makes me feel good. It tastes good too! I never knew that chocolate milk could help restore my energy like that. Holly-Team Captain, GOT CHOC MILK
During our first week of Hoopfest training, we all gave it a try. So far, most of us feel like it can't be a complete replacement of water or sports drinks (because you can't chug it...it's not a thirst quencher) but it definitely gives you a burst of energy and fills your tummy if you happen to be a little bit hungry. One of the girls on our team gets low blood sugar and gets really weak if she hasn't eaten enough or doesn't have enough sugar in her system so the chocolate milk was really helpful for her. Jessie, Team Captain-CHIEFTAINS
I have been really consistent with drinking the chocolate milk within 30 minutes of a workout. Activities/workouts have picked up quite a bit in anticipation for Hoopfest, so my body has been a little more fatigued lately, but I do however feel as though the recovery time needed between workouts has shortened. It is hard to replenish the fluids my body desires when working out in the heat or during a workout without getting a full belly, but drinking chocolate milk after a workout has worked out fine. I do notice the need to have something that will replenish nutrients that water doesn't provide during a grueling weekend like Hoopfest and I think drinking chocolate milk will definitely help keep my body feeling energized. Meet our teams!
From Spokane:
Got Choc Milk, 10th grade girls team
Unikornz, 8th grade boys team
From Seattle:
The Chieftains, womens team
Named after the past mascot of their alma mater, Seattle University, team captain Jessie and the Chieftains are training for their return to Hoopfest after a promising 2nd place finish last year in their competitive bracket.
Glory Daze, mens team
Team captain Joe is competing in his 10th year at Hoopfest and will be playing alongside his team mates of two years. Winning multiple championships already, Joe hopes to lead his team to a strong showing this year.
Nutrition experts Emily Edison, M.S., R.D. and Michelle Weinbender, R.D. met with the teams and provided a nutrition briefing prior to the start of the training period.
The experts focused on showing the teams how to fuel up for practice or game time by eating nutrient-rich foods; and how to refuel, rehydrate, and replenish the body post-practice with low-fat chocolate milk.
At the briefing, Emily provided her teams with some tips on eating healthy and refueling with low-fat chocolate milk. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lRW2j91tp-I
Team captains Jessie and Joe gave us their reactions and thoughts on chocolate milk for recovery and Emily's presentation. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8S-1zw9QUks
